Conventional bids or play

At rubber bridge a player may not make use of any convention in bidding or play unless his side has disclosed its use beforehand, or the players have agreed beforehand that understandings be disclosed at the time of use. Most players tend to use the alerting procedures used in duplicate and set out below.

At duplicate, players are expected to warn opponents that a conventional bid has been made by the caller's  partner either waving the alert card or by saying 'alert' or by banging the table.
