Supporting partner, after a suit bid, with 6-8 points

PREAMBLE

This is the S of SYN, the acronym for responders' choices.

Supporting partner has the simple meaning of raising her in her suit ie 1H-2H; 1S-3S; 1D-4D etc. In an uncontested auction, responder must always have 4-card support, since opener is entitled to open with only a 4-card suit, and eight cards between the two hands is essential for a good trump contract.

The implication of raising a minor is that responder does not have a major suit to show.

S Q32 After 1D from partner, prefer 1H to 2D.If opposition intervene with 1S or 2C, you are not strong enough for 2H and will bid 2D.

S Q32 After 1D from partner, 2D or 1NT are reasonable responses.

There are five cases to consider, depending on responder's point count.

Consider the case of responder holding 6-8 points.

A simple raise is good enough. Partner will not bid on unless she has a good hand.

S K432 Raise 1S to 2S. Intervention by opponents should not stop you making this bid, but if the opponents have a suit of their own, your problem may be deciding when to stop.

C 4 3 2
Raise 1H to 2H. If partner bids 3H, she is inviting you to game if you are maximum. You are, so bid 4H.

Touching dummy's cards

I hate people who think that my dummy is untidy, and kindly start rearranging it. Dummy belongs to ME and the law clearly states ' No player shall touch any cards other than his own (but declarer can touch dummy's cards in accordance with the law), during or after play, except by permission of the director'.
