Responding to partners' opening bid of 1NT after opposition
intervention
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| S 32 | Opponents bid two spades over partners' opening bid of one no-trump. You must pass. |
| H A432 | |
| D K97 | |
| C J864 |
To raise partner to 2NT or 3NT, we need the correct point count and reasonable cover in the opponents suit. A double for penalties should always be considered in these cases.
In the examples that follow, partner has opened 1NT.
| S Q97 | If opponents intervene with two hearts, you would be fully entitled to bid 2NT, or you could double for penalties. |
| H AQ3 | |
| D 9864 | |
| C K32 |
| S A86 | After an intervention of two spades by opponents, 3NT would be risky. A double for penalties would be better. |
| H K932 | |
| D K86 | |
| C K86 |
With a five-card suit yourself, it may be worth competing.
| S AK543 | After 2C, 2D or 2H from opponents, 2S must stand a fair chance. |
| H 97 | |
| D 975 | |
| C 864 |
| S AK543 | After 2C, 2D or 2H from opponents, 3S or even 4S would not be unreasonable. |
| H A97 | |
| D K2 | |
| C 975 | |
|
If opponents double your one no-trump, they hold 15+ points and the double is for penalties. That situation is covered here. |

| Top of page | A little girl was asked to prepare a short story
which introduced the word 'frugal'. She went home and found that
the dictionary definition was to save.
" Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess who was riding her horse beside a river when the horse slipped and she fell into the rushing water. Just then, a handsome prince rode by and she called out, 'Frugal me, frugal me' so he got off his horse and frugalled her and they lived happily ever after." |
