Bidding two hearts over opener's one spade

We are still in the realm of responses to partner's opening bid of one of a suit, and are still looking at the Y in SYN, your own suit. In particular, we are facing an opening bid of one spade.

Experienced Acol players will only bid two hearts in this situation if they hold a five-card suit.

S 432 After partners bid of 1S, you can respond 2H, showing your five-card suit. This is useful to partner who can support with only three hearts. Remember that your eight-point requirement still holds good.

If this is your understanding with your partner then there will be occasions when you need to' manufacture' a bid, and this can have unfortunate repercussions. The stronger you are in response, the less likely you are to be in trouble.

S 432 After partner's 1 S, you cannot bid 2H (you do not have a five-card heart suit ) and so you make a waiting bid  of  2C  or 2D.   If partner ( sadly ) supports this, then NT may be best.

S A32 After partner's 1S, a waiting bid of 2C followed later by a NT contract, often prevents a club lead. Devious ! If opponents come in here with anything, double for penalties.

Did you hear that the Uxbridge man who kept himself awake every night for seventeen years by snoring, has at last found the answer ? He's going to sleep in another room.
