Bidding your suit naturally at the one level, after partner has opened one of a suit

This is the Y of SYN, responders' acronym, the second option that responder has got ( if she cannot support partner ) which is to bid her own suit ( Y-your own suit---bid it ).

At the one-level, a minimum of six points is all that is required for responder to enter the auction. She might have a much stronger hand, up to 15 points or even bigger, and has no need to show it at this stage. A one-level response does not imply a weak hand.

Changing the suit in response forces opener to bid again unless the opposition have intervened, when such principles become blurred.

S A864 After 1H, 1S is fine ( and would be so even with, say, two more aces ) .You will probably pass anything partner now says. If the opposition comes in with 2C or 2D, your 2S would force partner to 3H, so pass or bid an unsatisfactory 2H.

S 5432 However poor a major may be, it is very important to show it at the one-level in preference to most other bids. After1H, bid 1S.Opposition intervention would have the same result as the hand above.

S A864 After 1H, 1S is still best. Your second bid will take the contract to game. If the opposition intervene when you hold a strong hand like this, you have two extra options---double for penalties or bid their suit which is forcing to game.

S K762 After 1H, prefer 1S to 2NT, a bid you can always make on the second round.
