Opener's rebids with a 4-4-4-1 shape

Much of this is already covered in the page dealing with 'opening the bidding with 4-4-4-1 shape', so make sure you are au-fait with that before proceeding.

Since we expect partner to bid our singleton, our second bid is normally the most economic available. We need a very good hand to jump if this is going to turn into a misfit.

S 2 After a 1H opener and a 1S response, 2C or 2D is enough. Give way to opponents easily on this hand.

D AJ43

S 2 After 1H-1S, you might jump to 3C, or possibly try 2NT with this better hand.

If you have a fit, give thanks and settle for a likely part-score, unless you have 16+.

S A432 After 1H-2H, pass. After 1H-1S, support to 2S. After 1H-2C, if opponents intervene in H or D, let it go.

D AJ43
C 2

S AJ43 After 1C-1H, you are worth 3H.After 1C-3C, you'll be wrong whatever you do. Options are 3NT, 4C, 5C or pass.

D 2
C AK43

If partner's first response was in no-trumps, it is probably politic to find a second bid.

S 2 If partner replies 1NT to your opening 1H, it is probably better to bid 2C.

Serendipity

Most players are able to find the perfect bid, the correct line of play and the killing defence with hindsight. Players who regularly indulge in long discussions of this sort used to be known as Result Merchants or Second Guessers.
