Odds and Ends

Defender's play when third in hand (continued)

With touching honours, the way third hand plays them is absolutely crucial. The rule is quite simple:- With touching honours, third in hand, play the lowest of these honours. I suppose it's deceptively simple, really, as it conflicts with the way you play your honours in any other position at the table eg when on lead, you would lead the highest of touching honours.

  Dummy
Partner 8 5 3 You
K 9 7 6 2 # Q J 4
If the 6 is led and your jack draws the Ace, partner knows that you must hold the Queen. If the Queen were played and taken by the  Ace, partner would know nothing about the location of the jack. This is a typical no-trump situation, where the location of the missing high cards is crucial for partner when she is working out whether to continue the suit or not.

  Dummy
Partner  Q 53 You
2 # K J 10 9
In a trump contract, if the 3 is played from dummy, your 9 is sufficient. What do you know? Partner does not have a doubleton (she is not petering), and it's unlikely to be a singleton, so you cannot give her a ruff. If you continue with this suit, you will give declarer a trick with her Queen, so switch to another suit and wait for partner to lead this suit to you later.

In the examples which follow, try and work out:-

  1. Which card you will play from your hand
  2. What sort of holding your partner has led from
  3. Should you continue with this suit, now or later ?
