Preservation or creation of entries (continued)

This one is also quite tricky.

The contract is four hearts and a trump is led. Can you see the problem ?

We need access to dummy to throw a losing club on the ace of diamonds. How can we create it ?

Try leading your jack of spades at trick two. If the opponents take it, your queen of spades is an entry. If not, you can follow with the ace of spades and ruff the third round to enter dummy. Either way, you get access to dummy's vital ace of diamonds for your tenth trick.

In the following examples, assume declarer is playing in a no-trump contract and dummy is short of entries. Thanks again are due to Reese and Dormer in 'The complete book of bridge'.

If declarer lets the queen run, defenders will duck and three entries to dummy will be needed to run the suit. Overtake the queen with the king and only two entries are required.

Overtake the king with the ace and a favourable lie of the cards will need only one entry to bring the suit home.

Having only one entry to dummy and requiring four tricks from this suit, you must play the king, overtake the queen with the ace and play a third round. A 3:3 break or the fortunate fall of the jack or the nine will then yield the four tricks necessary.

This final hand is the ultimate test on this page.

Most declarers would stop in four hearts, but you find yourself in six hearts against a spade lead. Can you see the problem ?

Well done if you spotted that the spade suit is blocked. How can you get round this ?

Congratulations if you decided to discard a club on the initial spade lead. Twelve tricks are then easy.

When you are ready, have a look at these practise hands which encompass concepts from all aspects of declarer play.
