Answers to quiz on Stayman

You have opened one no-trump and partner has bid two clubs, Stayman.  There is no opposition bidding. What is your reply?

1)
S A 2
H A 6 5 4
D K 9 7 6
C Q 7 3

1) 2H. You have a four-card heart suit and that's what you must tell partner. Yours not to wonder why.

Back to question 2).

2)
S A 2
H A 6 5
D K 9 7
C Q 7 4 3 2

2)  2D. You don't have four hearts or four spades and you must make this conventional reply.

Back to question 3).

3)
S A 4 3 2
H A 7
D J 9 8
C A 4 3 2

3)  2S. Tell partner that you have a four-card spade suit. It's up to him what he does with the information.

Back to question 4).

In the following hands, you have decided to use Stayman and have received the response shown. There is no opposition bidding. What is your next bid?

4)
S 7 6 5 3 2
H A 9 7 6
D K 5
C 7 6
1NT -- 2C
2D -- ?

4)  2S. This weakness take-out has the same meaning as if you had used it straightaway instead of Stayman.

Back to question 5).

5)
S 7 6 5 3 2
H A 9 7 6
D K 5
C 7 6
1NT -- 2C
2H -- ?

5)  Pass. A contract of two hearts with a 4-4 fit is much better than a weak two spades without any knowledge of partner's holding.

Back to question 6).

6)
S A 7 6 4
H A 7 6 4
D Q J 2
C Q J
1NT -- 2C
2H -- ?

6)  4H. You have a heart fit and the points for game.

Back to question 7).

7)
S A 7 6 4
H A 7 6 4
D Q J 2
C Q J
1NT -- 2C
2D -- ?

7)  3NT. You have points for game and without hearts or spades, partner must surely hold some clubs. If not, it's her fault.

Back to question 8).

8)
S 2
H K 3 2
D A 7 6 5 2
C A 7 6 5
1NT -- 2C
2H -- ?

8)  3H. A difficult one (my partner didn't like it when I did it some few weeks ago). I know it's only a 4-3 fit, but if partner is maximum, a four-heart game could be on. If you don't like this, you could pass 2H or bid 2D initially instead of Stayman.

Back to question 9).

9)
S 2
H K 3 2
D A 7 6 5 2
C A 7 6 5
1NT -- 2C
2S -- ?

9)  2NT  Partner is covering your weakness in spades, which is what you hoped for when you used Stayman.

Back to question 10).

In the following hands you must decide whether to use Stayman or not. All I want is a yes or no, but you can offer an explanation if you wish.. Partner has opened 1NT and there is no opposition bidding.

10)
S K 7 6
H A 9 4 3
D 9 7 5
C Q 4 2

10)  No. You can't handle 2D or 2S.

Back to question 11).

11)
S A J 4
H 3 2
D K Q 3 2
C K J 3 2

11)  Yes. You hope partner has the hearts covered, in which case you can bid 3NT. If you hear 2S or 2D, it's decision time. Will you be bold or timid?

Back to question 12).

12)
S 9 8 7
H 9 8 7
D 2
C A J 9 6 3 2

12)Yes. You intend to bid 3C, whatever the response.

Back to question 13).

13)
S 6 5 4 3 2
H 9 8 7 6
D A 3 2
C 2

13)  Yes. You will finish in either 2H or 2S.

Back to question 14).

14)
S K 4 3 2
H K 4 3 2
D A 2
C K Q 7

14)  Yes. 4H or 4S are perfect contracts, and, if pushed, 3NT is probably OK.

Back to question 15).

15)
S K Q 7 3 2
H Q 4
D A 7 6
C K 7 6

15)  No. Three spades is your best bid, forcing on partner and giving you a final contract of 4S or 3NT.

Back to question 16).

16)
S A 9 7 6
H A 9 3
D K 7 2
C K 7 2

16)  No. This hand is too balanced for Stayman. Bid 3NT immediately.

Back to top, or back to beginning of quiz or back to Stayman.

This flashing back and forth is quite difficult to set up; my inclination is not to bother on subsequent quizzes.--just to give the one reference to the answer page. If anyone feels that the approach on this quiz has been particularly helpful, please let me know.

The best bid in the world is not a scrap of use if partner doesn't understand it.
